With nine years in PR & Communications, 10 years of writing online and for media, and formerly stationed in the US Coast Guard Contingency Planning office it’s fair to say that I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing!
Communications planning is just my thing.
I have a knack for narrowing down who your ideal clients are; it is honestly one of the most energizing parts of my work; seeing my clients’ faces light up as they uncover who they should truly be serving in their business. If you have ever felt unsure about who you really serve in your business, or would be happy to serve ANYONE who is willing to pay; this has to be your starting point.
Fun Fact: I’ve accepted my inner nerd and walk a tightrope between extrovert and introvert, though ‘officially‘ Myers-Briggs calls me an ENFJ.
I love helping my clients to get intentional about their biz communications; the who, what, when, where, why and how to identify, find and speak to your ideal clients.
Intentional business communication is the foundation of your business, it is what your future biz is built on, and it gathers your ideal clients. Not just any client, but who you want to work with.
For more than nine years, communications strategy has been at the heart of everything I’ve done in business. Starting out with a BA in Public Relations, while working in the Contingency Planning Office for the United States Coast Guard, I’ve been focused on PR, communications and writing ever since. (Fun Fact: I actually started out studying Environmental Studies but a basic business course was a requirement, which I thought I’d hate. Wow, was I wrong. I discovered PR for the first time and changed my major the next day! Never looked back)
And I love it.
My son was born in 2010 and like a lot of moms with a professional background, going back to work full time was a real struggle for me; every day that I left my gorgeous boy was traumatic! Not one to take well to being told what to do, I opened my own PR consultancy.
Over the years I’ve worked with many clients; big, small, insurance, retail and creative agencies, and in a variety of industries. Many times over the last few years I’ve been asked to “write a couple of social media posts”, “write a quick press release” or “edit copy someone else wrote” with no strategy behind it. And that’s when entrepreneurs get off track; not realizing that all the communications, the conversations, networking, asocial networking is shaped by your Communications Plan.
But so many entrepreneurs put the cart before the horse; choose social media platforms before getting to know their clients, write media releases with no call to action or write copy without looking at the problems faced by their clients.
Working with women, who are often juggling mamahood as well, energizes & inspires me. Women who work for themselves have a massive impact on the lives of their families (specifically their children), their communities. They have an opportunity to leave a legacy that isn’t only about money, but how they give back in other ways. Spending more time with their families and contributing to the household income, often as a sole breadwinner.
The deeper stuff…who am I?
I’m a proud work-from-home, single, homeschooling mama.
“I’m sorry, you are doing what?”
This is the question I get the most (well, maybe not literally asked out loud, but it’s the reaction that I get most often).
Yes. I am a single mom.
Yes. I work from home, for myself (sole breadwinner)
And yes, I am homeschooling.
Needless to say, time to me is more precious than California rain.
But here’s my secret: I know the reason I am doing it, and that fuels a fire so far deep inside that it spills right out of me and onto my clients.
Decades ago my parents divorced (I was nine and had a three year old sister) and while the split wasn’t the worst thing that could happen, it set up a chain of events that brought me to where I am right now. The divorce was pretty messy and drawn out but the biggest, most lasting impact that it had on me was spending the next eight years without any one in my corner, not a single cheerleader.
No one who said, “good job“, or “I believe in you“, and not one person came to see my games/matches/practices (swimming, cross country running and track, spring board diving…the list goes on) in those years. When I was a preteen I won a mountain race (in my age group) in our small town, I think I had been dropped off but no one watched me run and no one was there at the end of the race. In fact, when I got a call that the local newspaper wanted all the winners to come to the local community center for a photo the same day, I had to go by myself.
This is tough to write, and I thought about not writing it at all, but because it forms part of who I am, my business, my work ethic and even who I work with now, let’s get it all out on the table.
Not being present in my life emotionally and present at important highlights in my life was a choice that my mom made way back in those days; she chose not to attend.
And I choose differently.
But that isn’t the end of my story…it’s the beginning
I don’t have bitterness about that time of my life, my mom did the best she could at the time; I later discovered many people who stood by me and cheered for me over the years. In fact I‘m grateful for that childhood because it has made me who I am today.
A mom who has an absolute mission to be there for my child. To be a part of his adventures, to play a significant role in all he is and what he becomes.
To be my family’s cheerleader.
It has also fueled my desire, my need, to help other moms and female entrepreneurs who are striving for Balance, who understand that we aren’t bringing our stuff with us when we pass away, it is only what we leave behind that counts. The only time we have is the present.
And it is a present; it is a gift.
Change your story. Change your legacy.
So to say that time is precious and a wasted hour can never be returned underpins my essence. My clients feel the same way, entrepreneurs who want to do as much in one
I pour everything I have into every consultations with my clients; to get your audience down to such a specific niche that you know them like a best friend, that you speak the language of your ideal clients so every single thing you do in your business becomes streamlined, efficient, and designed purely for that precious group.
You won’t get back the few hours you spend with me, so my sole intention together is ensure the time you do spend with me is paid back to you tenfold by making your business more efficient.
